Management Styles

I learned many years ago that there are very many different ways of being a leader.

1) There are the fear mongers who basically threaten your job/position unless you fly straight.

Fuck you. I think this is actually illegal now, I am not sure but it certainly isn't very effective on many unless they desperately need their job and have no chance in hell on living on minimum wage at the local *insert local fast food joint/gas bar here* I never subscribed to this theory or style of people management. Neither as an employee, nor a manager.

2) The micro-manager. Someone who stands over your shoulder and watches absolutely everything you do. Would you like to pluck some pubes while you are there boss? You are that fucking close.

Fuck you. Tell me what needs to be done and leave me to my own devices. If I need something, I know I can ask so no worries there. Have faith in your staff/team to get the job done since thats why you fucking hired them in the first place. If you have doubts about the staff's ability to do the work without a babysitter get a different team. Nothing wrong with checking in once in a while to see how things are going - first rule of management is delegation, and its this for a reason. So you DON'T have to do it yourself. I hate being micro-managed. Have 3 right now. I persoanlly cannot fucntion well in this environment. I am not 18 years old with a lack of motivation, and short attention span (unless she is 18 with a tight ass and nice tits hawing free beers). If you want to micro-manage me, obviously you have some short-comings at home where you are not in control and you have to control everything at the office.

3) The company Yes-Man. I have nothing against being loyal to your company and working hard for the people that pay your wages and toting the lines and cheering the praises of your team. No doubt its important - but when you spout phrases, paragraphs out of management handbooks and sound like a PodCast on how to manage people by Lee Iacocca (look it up numbnuts).

Fuck you textbook boy. Most of us "older" people have read the same books you have - want to teach? (and some of us have) create your own style and don't quote books verbatim. To me you look fake and sound fake and eventually you get found out. (Unless the people above you are incredibly thick and cannot even see through it). Invent your own style, don't be someone else cockknocker because you get ZERO respect from me for having read a book. I read lots of books and quoting them does not make me look like a big man or a better man, just well read and the ability to remember a few choice quotes. Bite me.

4) The "make everyone happy" manager. I unserstand this guy but I learned another thing way back when the Internet was actually interesting. You cannot be everything to everyone.

Fuck you "give the ship away for free" manager. Just because people whinge/bitch/moan about something does not mean you give up and give them shit for free. Stand up for yourself, stand up for the policies and procedures that are even legally signed by the complainers and don't give in. I understand you cannot always hide behind policies and procedures but they are there for a reason. To protect the company and its employees in case shit hits the fan. CYA as its known in some circles ends up being BOHICA for others. This is probably the easiest position to be in. Give shit away for free and take a hit but someone is happy. For now. Fuck you. 1 unhappy person doesn't always kill it for everyone. Grow some nuts.

5) Me. Play hard and play fair is always my motto as a football (soccer for you ignorant Americans). Same as my staff. Other things seem to cross over as well. Concepts that seem to fit into both sports management and corporate team management. Put the best people in the position that best suits their abilities. Don't put square pegs into round holes as the saying goes. Everyone seems to be focused on "numbers", "the bottom-line", "results". The list goes on. But you get my point. I was once told by an Operations Manager at a very HUGE telecom firm and someone who I respect very much one thing - "Don't worry about scores, points, how well you are doing, money, the bottom line, how much there is to do. Just go about your job, do it to the best of your ability and everything else will fall in line." His point? If you worry about everything that your job depends on, you are not focused on the task at hand (I figure this to be your primary job function) and everything else will happen regardless. Motivation techniques? Well lose or go home never sat well with me. Regardless of the outcome in sports you always go home. At work, you will go home. Work harder/faster and get paid more? But at what cost? Different things motivate different people. Money does not motivate everyone to the same extent. Fuck you - I love money, but I am not going to kill myself for 33% more taxes to pay for shit I don't even use and haven't used in years (school taxes for one, road repairs for 2). Yes this is a part of micro-mgmt but treat people as individuals and give them a common goal and I am sure you will see positive results.

Fuck You. Who? Those managers who "cookie-cutter" teams and expect them to all behave identically. They cannot and will not. Learn to manage personalities and people, not what the company handbook tells you to do with your team.

Apparently I have been slacking off on my blog/rant/days etc. Yeah well I have. Call it laziness, call it procrastination but the fact of the matter is that I feel I have nothing of note to say to the planet. Its not that I have nothing to say but maybe its stuff I do not feel the need to share. Or maybe it is. Dunno.

Part of me feels like this - if I slack off on something, I personally feel guilty to an extent but sometimes I feel like "Why not?" -- most of the people I deal with seem to be able to get away with being complacent and lazy so why not me? Probably because I have a sense of pride? Perhaps. Of course then it begs the question - when is it my turn to get everything I wanted with no hassle?

Let me start with MPI. (Manitoba Public Insurance for those who don't live here.) First off, they have amalgamated the auto-insurance, drivers license facilities. Well that sounded like good news since I got back from Toronto. Makes things in my life easier I thought. Well fuck me if it has been a worse hassle than talking to monkeys at Wells Fargo Financial.

Fuck you MPI. You cannot even type a number right for my bank to debit my account properly? I get this letter stating I HAVE to get this corrected immediately or my bank will charge ME $10 for having the wrong account information at MPI. Umm - how does this work again? Someone else fucks up, so I have to go out of my way to correct it or pay a "fine" for your mistake, not mine. Maybe I should send them a bill for my time (billable hours of course with no partials). Maybe that would send some sort of message.

Fuck you MPI...AGAIN! You call me to tell me that the documents you faxed TWO WEEKS AGO to your "head office" to process my license did not go through and that I will need to get back to MPI as soon as possible to rectify the situation. Jeeeez. Not only did I have to retake my photo 3 times because they fucked up my name on the first one's they also decided to tell me that my documents were not eligible and that they needed my ON license which they already had. I said "Look, you took my docs once, you took my license. I am NOT giving you anything else but a bill for my time to sort out YOUR monkey staff." -- -So they "called" someone and sent everything off in hopes all would be OK since I do not have the time to return - to whit, the genius at MPI then tells me the temp. license they issue you is going to expire BEFORE my new one may or may not arrive at my house. Erm, this is no good. Fuck you - you fix it. They place ANOTHER call to MPI "headquarters (where monkeys blow goats and bill everyone else for being late or having wrong info)" - she is informed "to her astonishment I might add" that she can issue a new temp license. Well fuck me with a cricket bat, she doesnt know her job either.

Fuck you MPI for wasting a total 3 trips to your office, about 3 hours of my time and being threatened with payments, and driving without a valid license.

PS - its fixed now but not before I bitched heavily. I have yet to send a bill for my time. Thoughts anyone?

If I wanted to pull a Michael Richards I would have been out of a job - not to mention character; especially in a public venue such as the front doors of my store in front of other customers and several co-workers who all did pay closer attention when the accusation was made.

If you are single and do not have children, why is it that those that do think you have no life, and no respoonsibility. Why is it that they usually get preferential treatment or their behaviour is excused because "...oh they have kids at home."

Fuck you. How is my life any less important or desirable because I wasn't stupid enough to knock someone up or choose to have children. I am not saying punish those that are bearing kids, but honour those of us that don't choose this life. Since I do not have the responsibility of raising children I am able to spend my time on other pursuits, but again those should not be viewed as secondary or tertiary to rearing children.

Fuck you. Life isn't always fair but if we have the power to make things equal (think equal rights for women, giving women the right to vote, equal pay for equal work et al) then treat single people without children as such. I shouldn't have to work EVERY FUCKING weekend since December (including Sunday's now) just because YOU have children and I do not. YOU have the power to be fair and equal and just, and you choose not to be even though you CLAIM you are a fair and honest person. In the end, like most of us, you are selfish and looking out for number 1. Fair enough - but if you want to keep employees you supposedly admire, you might want to grease the wheel once in a while.

Read about this from my buddy's blog - will link to that shortly - but this is the oddest thing I have ever seen. Well close to it. I once knew a guy who was part of a competition called the Silver Sow where the object is to fuck the ugliest chick you can find, then bring her to the bar shortly after as proof. Ugh. Anyways - onto the bizarre.

I am not a huge fan of pancakes. I used to be as a kid. I mean who didn't when they were a kid. I had some a few months back as part of the "big breakfast" at a TeeDot restaurant chain known to me as "The Girdle" AKA "The Griddle". I was sick afterwards, like barfing sick that is. It wasn't so much the pancakes as much as it was that I just had to eat the ENTIRE stack. I didn't really want the pancakes, but it came with the biggest breakfast they had so I ordered. I ate. I puked. Lesson learned. Oh well. Now I can't stop saying PANCAKES. Maybe thats why the kid in the video is going ape-shit. Anyways, as a segue goes this is enough...onto the footage.

IT Admin Gets 8 Years for Cyber Sabotage

Chicago (IL) - Putting an interesting twist on the all too common stock fraud story, a systems administrator at financial services firm UBS Paine Webber has been sentenced to eight years in prison for planting malicious software in the company's system in order to manipulate its stock price.
Earlier this year, Roger Durino was found guilty of securities fraud and computer fraud after it was discovered that he implanted a "logic bomb" in the firm's computer network, with the purpose of wiping out large amounts of data. Durino then invested thousands of dollars in "put option" securities, which pay off if a specific stock price drops.
Allegedly, Durino's actions were an act of revenge after UBS cut his annual bonus from $50,000 to $32,500, according to Business & Legal Reports. However, in addition to being caught, Durino's investment tumbled after stock prices failed to fall as a result of the logic bomb.
Sentencing was recently announced for Durino, and the cost for his cyber crime tallies in with a 97 month jail sentence, or just over eight years, in addition to paying $3.1 million to UBS, the amount it claims was spent to repair damages done to the company from the malicious code.

Forgot to mention I got the best Xmas present ever. No it wasn't even the memory of my first "boner" but a Rapala toque! Nothing screams "redneck" more than this but hey. For some reason I love it.

I hate being sick. Last time I was sick was early 2005. Before that was during World Cup 2002. There is light at the end of the tunnel though so all is not lost. I did feel guilty about calling in sick to work but in my experience with consumer retail - your computer saviour probably shouldn't be hacking up a lung and spleen while trying to explain why your computer is infected with the latest Gay Latino Porn trojan/worm/virus. So yeah I called in sick.

I have to say that I do like my new job. So far. Though the technical work is easy as eating a brick of cheese, its still entertaining to see consumers take a computer home, and 2 days later bring it back infected with said pornography side-effects. so to the online-porn industry I say "Thank You." For without you, work would be boring hardware repairs, and I'd probably be out of business.
